This course will briefly review basic neuroanatomy and related systems involved in maintaining balance in order to efficiently and effectively evaluate patients with balance disorders.  In the morning, evidence-based functional outcome measures for balance will be discussed and practices as they relate to specific balance balance deficits and patient populations.  The course will end with a presentation of what is on the horizon for the treatment of balance deficits.

This course is designed to provide the clinician with strategies for analysis and intervention of gait impairment in older adults and those with neuropathology.  A brief review of “typical” gait will be presented prior to thorough discussion of impairments and patterns that impair the safety and independence of patients in these key populations.  Intervention for quality, distance, and safety of gait will be presented for older adults and those with neuropathology.  The course will also guide the clinician in problem-solving appropriate orthotic prescription.  To close, strategies for successful documentation of skilled need will be discussed.
